Police say a 21-year-old from Luton was the man who died on the A421 near Lidlington last week.
The man killed in a car crash on the A421 near Lidlington last week has been named as Karl Evans.
The 21-year-old, from Hockwell Ring in Luton, died on October 1 when the Honda Civic he was travelling in left the road and collided with a tree, causing the vehicle to catch fire.
Mr Evans suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second man was taken to Bedford Hospital South Wing in a critical condition. He is now said to be stable but suffered a broken leg and a dislocated knee.
Police say they believe the occupants of the car may have been involved in a burglary which took place in Oat Piece, Marston Moretaine.
The vehicle was under observation by a stationary police car parked in a layby just prior to the collision.
The crash was referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), as per normal procedure, and was being initially investigated by Hertfordshire Police, but has since been referred back to the Bedfordshire force.
A spokesman for Bedfordshire Police said: "Having looked at the events surrounding the incident, the IPCC has confirmed that it will not be supervising the inquiry. It will instead be managed locally by the Bedfordshire Police professional standards department."
Three men were reported at the scene of the crime, but only two men were in the car at the time of the accident. Police are still searching for the third suspect.
Anyone with information about the burglary can contact Bedfordshire Police on 01234 841212. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
