Five senior officers have now resigned since it was announced the council would be abolished

Two more senior officers have handed in their resignations at County Hall.

Andy Allsopp, assistant director of communications, and Cajetan Chukwulozie, the assistant director for internal audit and risk management, are both leaving the authority.

That means five senior staff have resigned since it was announced the council would be abolished five months ago.

Bedfordshire County Council will close for good in April next year, as part of a shake-up of local government in Bedfordshire. Its powers will be taken over by the Town Hall in Bedford Borough, and by a new council for Central Bedfordshire. Chief executive Andrea Hill quit four days after it was announced the council would be abolished.

She has since been followed by Huw Jones, the director of environment, and director of community services Charlie McNally.

Mayor of Bedford Frank Branston was unsurprised by the news.
He said: "It is difficult to say if this is good, bad or indifferent news for taxpayers.

"It is one of those things that we all knew would happen – not necessarily specific people, but we all knew that people would be leaving.

"The challenge at Bedford Borough Council is to recruit new people who are of the same or better quality."
