Calling young diabetics
Britain’s first ever Paediatric Diabetes East of England Games are to be held on Wednesday, August 29.
Organisers are calling on Luton youngsters to sign up for the event which takes place in Cambridge.
Diabetes affects more than 20,000 children in England, most of whom have type 1 diabetes.
Our region has the third highest number of young people under 17 with the condition in the country.
The event has been organised by the East of England Paediatric Diabetes Network and is designed to promote exercise and sport as a key part of daily diabetes management.
It has been timed to coincide with the start of the Paralympic Games and is open to anyone under 16 being cared for at hospitals in the area.
Events and activities range from athletics, tug-of-war and dodge ball to welly throwing and the ‘bleep’ test.
There will be trophies for each of the winning teams from three age groups – under seven, seven to 11 and 12 to 16.
The family fun day is expected to attract 500 children with diabetes and their families. There will be a bouncy castle and face painting for the younger ones.
