Community order for benefit fraudster
A Luton woman has been convicted on two counts of benefit fraud.
Samantha Diprose (nee Piggott) of Thetford Gardens received a six month community order with a two month curfew from 8pm to 6am.
She was also ordered to pay £100 towards the council’s costs.
In addition she will have to repay the £8,609 she received in extra benefits after giving the council false information.
Members of the Audit and Investigation Team suspected she had an undisclosed partner.
Further enquiries revealed that Piggott, who was sentenced under her married name, failed to tell the benefit authorities she was living with her husband.
Her lies resulted in her receiving the extra benefits.
Portfolio holder for finance, Cllr Robin Harris, said: “With so many people experiencing real financial hardship these days, it is particularly disturbing to find anyone cheating the system by lying about their situation.
“Benefit fraudsters should not and must not be tolerated in a civilised society.” > If you think someone you know is a fraudster, call the fraud hotline in complete confidence, giving as many details as possible, on 0500 500 777 or email fraud@luton.gov.uk
