If you’re concerned about the repair and restoration of the wonderful old churches at the heart of our communities, here’s a date for your diary.

Next Saturday (September 8) is the popular annual Bike ‘n’ Hike when more than 600 of these often culturally and architecturally important buildings will be open to the public.

The event – now in its 21st year – is organised by the Beds and Herts Historic Churches Trust.

Last year more than £102,000 was raised. The money goes towards maintenance - half to the donor’s nominated church, the rest being retained by the Trust and disbursed as grants throughout the year.

Organiser Madeline Russell said: “We have a growing band of regulars who look forward to the day with great anticipation.”
