Recruitment drive for club
Roger Sharp in front of Luton's Lansdowne Club
Luton’s historic Lansdowne Club is on a charm offensive to recruit new members.
Spokesman Roger Sharp, 68, said: “We’re a private members’ club with lots of facilities and a jam-packed agenda.”
Events this month include bridge, line dancing, tai chi, bingo and backgammon in addition to Sunday lunch jazz sessions, a rock ‘n’ roll night, music quiz, gala evening and ladies’ lunch club.
In addition there’s a snooker hall with five tables, a dining room, and cocktail lounge.
The New Bedford Road club was built in the 1880s as a private home, subsequently housed the Liberal Club and became the Lansdowne Club in 1957.
Roger said: “We’d like people to think of us as a suitable venue for family occasions and celebrations.
“But we can also cater for business functions, seminars, presentations, things like that.
“We’re in such a good location, near the town centre and with good parking facilities.”
The former police superintendent and Hatters fan said it was also a convenient place to have a drink before the match – and often to drown your sorrow afterwards.
> Membership is £100 a year. For more information call the club on 01582 702553.
