Up to 20 schools in Luton are expected to take part in The Big Pedal, which starts at the end of this month.

Charity Sustrans is encouraging children, parents and teachers to ditch the car for the school run between 28 February and 20 March.

Research has shown nearly half of all children want to be able to get to school by bike but only four per cent actually do.

Sustrans chief exec Malcolm Shepherd said: “The average primary school journey is just 1.5 miles – the perfect distance to walk or cycle.”
