VIDEO: Art gets stamp of approval
Amid the summer madness at London Luton airport, passengers found themselves with a rather prettier site than the departure board to look at as the Gateway Gallery officially opened last week.
The gallery features the work of five local artists who won a competition aimed at showcasing artists from the Beds, Herts and Bucks area.
Part-time art technician Anne-Marie Stijelija from Bedford was the first artist to have her pieces showcased.
She said: “I was absolutely ecstatic to be a competition winner.
“I already had the basis of the exhibition in an art shop in Bedford, but did tailor a few items towards the Olympics before entering.”
Her work consists of various images constructed entirely of recycled coloured stamps. This self titled ‘mail art’ has not only proven apt for the airport setting in which it is displayed, but images such as the queen’s head mounted on a Union Jack also tied in well with the Brit-mania surrounding the Olympic Games, which opened the day after the exhibition was put up.
The four other winning artists, Josie Shenoy, Lauren Clemmet, Lance Fennell and Warren Kerley, will have their work showcased at various times over the next year.
