Crews fight Wyevale fire for six hours
A garden centre in Caddington was completely destroyed when a fire ripped through it on Sunday morning.
The fire broke out at about 9.30am as staff were arriving for work at the Wyevale garden centre in Dunstable Road, and spread through the whole building in minutes.
Six fire engines from Luton and Stopsley, including a water carrier and a crew with an aerial ladder platform, raced to the scene and road closures were put in place by Bedfordshire Police.
No-one was hurt in the blaze, which was out by 3.30pm.
Wyevale spokesman Tom Wyatt said the fire brigade was alerted when a member of staff realised smoke thought to be coming from a nearby bonfire was actually coming from inside the store.
He said: "The store doesn't open until 10.30am on a Sunday but the staff were there - fortunately they were evacuated and no-one was injured at all.
"They called the fire brigade and by the time they arrived the entire store was effectively burnt down. No-one knows exactly what happened but given the timing we think it may have been an electrical fault. Obviously the staff are a little bit shocked."
Mr Wyatt said workers would be transferred to other Wyevale branches while the Caddington store was rebuilt.
An investigation is now under way to determine the cause of the fire.
