A savage attack by two dogs left a black labrador with a severe leg injury and more than 40 puncture wounds.
The three-year-old labrador, called Diesel, was being walked by his owner Wayne Griffin near Fensome Drive, in Houghton Regis, a fortnight ago, when he was mauled by two dogs that were off the leash.
Now Wayne's partner Marie Edwards, 32, who fears the animals that attacked Diesel could have been dangerous breeds, is calling for tighter dog controls.
She said: 'Wayne said they looked like American pit bull terriers, which is my concern. If they were Staffordshire bull terriers they were massive ones.
'They should have been muzzled, but when we phoned the council and the police they didn't seem interested. They need to be tougher on owners.
'The dogs were obviously trying to kill Diesel. Wayne had to kick one of them in the head because it was trying to rip Diesel's leg off. He had 45 puncture wounds and had to have emergency surgery on his leg.
'I just worry that the same thing could happen to other people out walking their dogs, or to children.'
