Town's first citizen makes the case for new road

Dunstable desperately needs a link road from the town to the planned new A5 northern bypass to help soothe its traffic headaches.

That was the message from Dunstable's new mayor, as 53-year-old town councillor Tony Green took up the role of first citizen.

This year's mayor-making night was held at Northfields Technology College, and Councillor Patricia Russell was elected as the new deputy mayor.

Mr Green thanked fellow councillors for electing him as the town's first citizen.

"It is a great honour, not only for myself but also for my wife, Denise, who will be supporting me as my mayoress," he said.

And he pledged to raise cash for the Pasque Hospice, Keech Cottage Children's Hospice, and Glenwood School, in Dunstable, during his year of office.

Today's Vote

Should worldwide tours of the Olympic flame be abandoned to stop giving protestors an easy target
Yes, it's a pointless stunt anyway and would not be missed
No, you can't give in to bully tactics from any quarter
Bring on more protests, they are more entertaining than the sport
