New face of council hopes to fulfil expectations

Councillor Tony Swain has been unveiled as the new first citizen in Houghton Regis after he was elected to the post by fellow town councillors.

Over the next 12 months he will become a familiar face in Houghton, representing the town at major events.

After being sworn in, the 55-year-old told councillors: 'I'm very honoured and feel very privileged to be standing here now as your town mayor.

'I really do hope that I fulfil the expections that you have for me.'

And he added: 'If you'd have said to me years ago that I'd be mayor of Houghton Regis, I'd say: 'Not a chance.''
