See computerised analysing machines at work

Take a tour of Luton & Dunstable Hospital's labratories in a rare open day on Saturday, November 8.

The high tech pathology labs, opened in 2002 by actor Richard Wilson from TV show One Foot in the Grave, contribute to 70 per cent of all medical diagnoses, and will be open to the public for guided tours.

Visitors can expect to see its three computerised analyzing machines – affectionately named Thomas, James and Percy after some well known steam engines - which run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and deal with 2,000 blood samples a day, many of which are sent in by GPs.

The open day is part of National Pathology Week, which takes place from November 3 to 9, and aims to promote a wider understanding of pathology.

Pathologists diagnose disease in the living and the dead and their work as the detectives of the NHS is vital for diagnosis.

Guided tours run from 10am until 4pm and children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Bookings for a tour, which should last one hour, can be made by emailing pathologyweek@ldh.nhs.uk
