A musical man from Luton was given a lifetime achievement award from the Mother Teresa International Award Committee.
Iftikhar Ahmed, 63, was honoured for his work promoting Indian classical music and dance in Luton, and visited Calcutta, India, to accept the award at a special ceremony last month.
He is the first Bangladeshi-born Brit to be chosen for the accolade, for his work as cultural affairs director of the Luton-based Academy of Performing Arts.
Mr Ahmed said: “I am over the moon, this means so much to me. For me this award is the icing on the cake for all the hard work that I have done.”
One of Mr Ahmed’s most notable achievements was organising a concert with Ravi Shankar and his daughter Norah Jones in Luton.
His award nomination was supported by a letter of recommendation from Luton North MP Kelvin Hopkins.
Mr Hopkins said: “I have been greatly impressed with the significant contributions he has made to the arts in Luton, in Britain and indeed across the world.
“He has brought to our local community a range of art performances from South Asia which have been fascinating and of high quality.”
