Sports centre to open in January

Lewsey Park plans

Lewsey Park plans

A NEW £1.5 million sports centre will be opening in Lewsey Park in January 2012.

Lewsey Sports Park will provide fitness, squash and boxing facilities on the site of the old snooker and squash club in Lewsey Park.

The centre is Active Luton’s latest project and is being built by leisure design and build specialist Createability.

Chief executive of Active Luton, Helen Barnett, said: “Lewsey Sports Park will be a massive boost for the local community which has had inadequate sports facilities for far too long leading to worryingly low participation levels.

“This is all set to change as this first class centre will attract new players and users from the local neighbourhood and from right across Luton.”

Active Luton will ensure the new centre is accessible to the local community by offering memberships and pay as you go options, as well as concessionary fees through the Luton Borough Council’s Go4Less scheme.

Councillor Tom Shaw, former Lewsey resident and local boxing advocate, said: “Lewsey residents have been telling me for a number of years that they want decent local sports facilities so it is very pleasing that this new complex is opening shortly.

“This is all about giving local people access to modern facilities right on their doorsteps that encourage them to become and stay active.

“I am particularly excited to bring boxing back to the local community, and with new opportunities for people of all ages to learn a range of new sporting skills, Luton is in a good position to produce more home grown sports champions.”
