The most common surnames in the country were revealed by researchers yesterday using an interactive map, and Luton and Dunstable have a rich blend of names from different ethnic origins.

Begum, Smith and Shah are the most common surnames in Luton; Begum is Bangladeshi, Shah is Indian and Smith is English.In neighbouring Dunstable, English names Smith and Brown were most common, followed by Welsh names Jones, Williams and Davies, and English name Taylor.

Second most common in Luton were Patel, which is of Indian origin, Pakistani names Khan and Hussain, the Welsh name Jones and English names Brown and Clarke.
