These lorries were once a familiar sight on Dunstable’s streets, delivering “anything, anywhere, anytime”.

Sid Hubbins came here from Edmonton and started his Dunstable haulage and removal business in the early 1920s.

He is seen, left, with one of his lorries in a photo taken in the 1930s. The other picture shows the lorries at the Hubbins garage at 9 Station Road.

Mr Hubbins was a prominent supporter of the Dunstable Sea Cadet Corps. When he was married in April 1946 the cadets attached ropes to the wedding car and hauled it from the Priory Church to the reception at Dunstable’s Commercial Hotel.

The haulage business was sold to Williams Transport in 1955 and flats have now been built on the old garage site. The photos belong to Sid’s son Michael, of Grove Road, Dunstable.
