One of the most significant incidents in Luton’s history took place 94 years ago today.
It was on July 19, 1919 that the Town Hall was destroyed by fire during the infamous Peace Day riots.
When Luton’s Mayor Henry Impey decided to hold a major event to celebrate peace after the First World War, he invited only councillors and friends.
The returning soldiers, many unemployed, many disabled, are forgotten, but are determined to make their voices heard.
These rare photographs capture the drama before and after the riot.
