World class athletes to coach Luton’s youth

How would you like to be coached by professional athletes?

Young people in Luton who are not currently in education, employment or training can take part in a new scheme where they will be mentored by world-class athletes.

The Get on Track scheme aims to equip 16-25 year olds with key skills that will help them get into work or training, such as self-discipline, motivation and confidence.

British boxing champion Hannah Beharry said: “I’m really excited about coming to Luton for Get on Track. The programme is a great chance for young people to really make a difference, not only in their own lives, but in their local community too.

“I really hope young people can make it as Get on Track really can change your life.”

Luton Borough Council’s Community Development Service is working with the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust and other local partners to deliver the project.

Over the duration of the programme, those on the course will learn about CV and interview skill while taking part in work experience and confidence building activities.

Get on Track will also offer the opportunity for the young people to take on a range of different sports

Professional athletes offer support throughout the course, using their experience of world-class competition to help motivate the young people while also sharing personal advice with them.

The third and final recruitment session for the course is at the Luton Employment, Training and Skills fair at Venue Central on February 5.

Workshops will be held at 11am and 3pm.

Joining Hannah will be GB Paralympic footballer Alistair Patrick-Hesselton.

Councillor Tafheen Sharif, who sits on the project steering group, said: “The Get on Track scheme is really fantastic for young people. In addition to providing practical experience, it allows them to gain some invaluable advice from some incredible athletes.”
