Young ones swing back to sixties

As it gets colder and darker outside, let the Phoenix Players transport you back to the long hot summer of 1961.

Their latest show The Young Ones tells the tale of a group of teenagers fighting to save their local youth club from imminent demolition at the hands of a property tycoon.

They decide to raise money for their plight by putting on a variety show, promising a mystery singer to top the bill.

Cue singing, dancing, and the sounds of the swinging sixties, particularly The Shadows.

Company secretary Diane Newman said: “The Phoenix Players have had a long love affair with the music of this era and in 2005 we were one of the first amateur companies in the UK to perform Summer Holiday.

“The music of The Shadows holds a place in the heart of our company as the Shadows were a particular favourite of my late husband Roger Newman, who was the society’s drummer up until last year when he passed away.

“It is with dedication that we perform this show and I’m sure many other societies in Luton that Roger worked with will appreciate the sentiment and its special meaning to us.”

With expert direction from Alan Purton, choreography by Jackie Hensley and musical direction from David Thomas, this show is not to be missed.

From November 15 - 17 at Luton Library Theatre. For tickets call 01582 596659 or 01582 547474.
