Students have no 'mortar' prove this year

Young bricklayers will show off their work on July 16 when they invite parents and friends to see their hand-built bungalow.

Students from Ashcroft, Cardinal Newman and Lealands High School have finished their first year of their Campus Luton Apprenticeship In Construction.

And this year's trainees have a hard act to follow as results have just been announced for students on the previous course - all 18 youngsters gained the BTEC Diploma in construction, equivalent to four GCSEs, with two gaining distinctions and three merits.

The course, run by Campus Luton, Barnfield College and the Education Business Partnership, offers students the opportunity to take the diploma as an option in their last two years of school.

As well as mixing cement and laying bricks, many students excel in electrical installation, plumbing and joinery.
