But Bedford will have majority of 2012 training camps
Eight locations in Bedfordshire have been announced as training camps for the 2012 London Olympics - but only one is in Luton.

The athletics track at Stockwood Park was the only venue in the town chosen to host a pre-games training camp, but Luton could be in with a shot at hosting more camps for the Paralympic events.

Those venues have yet to be decided, but the Hightown Sports and Arts Centre, Vauxhall Recreation Club and the University of Bedfordshire's Putteridgebury campus are all on the table.

The other Bedfordshire locations chosen for Olympic camps were the Bedford International Athletics Stadium (athletics), Bedford Modern School (table tennis), Bedford Autodrome and rural roads (road cycling), the Bunyan Centre (fencing, judo and wrestling), the College Equestrian Centre in Keysoe, Rowney Warren Woods (mountain biking) and the university's Bedford campus (archery).

Lee Allen, who has campaigned hard for an Olympic-sized swimming pool to be built in Luton, said he was not surprised that only one facility from the town had made the list.

He said: "At least we've got something. People have dragged their heels over the swimming pool for a long time so we were never going to have more than an athletics track.

"We could have had a pool but it was left too late."

Today's Vote

Should worldwide tours of the Olympic flame be abandoned to stop giving protestors an easy target
Yes, it's a pointless stunt anyway and would not be missed
No, you can't give in to bully tactics from any quarter
Bring on more protests, they are more entertaining than the sport
