Transport boost for town set for completion in 2012

Transport Minister Sadiq Khan announced an £80 million government funding package for the new Luton Dunstable Busway at Luton Train Station this morning.

On a flying visit to the town, the minister confirmed the investment which will pave the way for a 'guided busway' which will cover a seven mile stretch from Houghton Regis to Luton Airport.

He said: "When completed, this scheme will benefit the entire community by easing congestion and encouraging greater integration between services."

Following further detailed design work, the main construction of the busway is due to start in December with completion of the project due for April 2012.

Bongodog,

Beside the disastrous Cambridge Busway 10/03/2010 14:28:03
Commiserations to the people of Luton and Dunstable.
Yesterday it was announced that the Cambridge busway which is now over a year late, with no opening day in sight, is more than £40 million overbudget, with the client, Cambridgeshire County Council, and the contractor Bam Nuttall at loggerheads over who is to blame.
The prime reason that Cambridge has a busway project, is that the Government put up £90 million, but offered no money for anything else.
It appears that no lessons have been learnt and Luton is to have the same all or nothing grant, and the same contractor who at present has a rather dubious record with busways.

They say that to find a good workman you should aske your neighbours, well here's a naeighbourly tip from your neighbours in Cambridgeshire.

The Cambridgeshire Guided busway is a fiasco and a scandal. Late and unfit for purpose; the local council told residents that they had a contract that put all the risk on the developer and the developer (BAM NUTTALL) is walking away and refusing to fix major engineering mistakes which are stopping the busway opening. For example, we have the submerged cyclepath/maintennace track built below the local water level, the bridge that is built in dodgy foundations and the Park and Ride that turns into a swimming pool. Our advice is that you do not want or need a guided busway, and you certainly want to avoid the contractors who made such a mess of the Cambridge one.
