Cyber community created for academies

A virtual world is being created for students at Luton's two Barnfield academies.

Students are enjoying Barnfield Island, where they create a virtual representation of themselves, called an 'avatar', and can do all the things they would in the real world.

The project, which is based on the hugely popular Second Life website, has cost £60,000 and is aimed at helping students with their learning.

Barnfield College's chief executive Pete Birkett said: ""We are constantly exploring new ways to accelerate and enhance learning, and this technology supports this thinking.

"In the longer-term, we hope to share our knowledge of this product with other organisations that may also benefit from the use of it."

Today's Vote

Should worldwide tours of the Olympic flame be abandoned to stop giving protestors an easy target
Yes, it's a pointless stunt anyway and would not be missed
No, you can't give in to bully tactics from any quarter
Bring on more protests, they are more entertaining than the sport
