Student honoured in national competition

This picture has won Luton amateur photographer Lukas Macek a group prize in a national competition.

Lukas, of Crawley Green Road, entered the CB Richard Ellis' national Urban Photographer of the Year contest with Wonder, this piece was taken when he visited Southend-On-Sea.

Photographers were invited to enter an image capturing a certain time of day in their city, resulting in 24 starkly contrasting images.

All 24 were honoured in the final, after being picked from hundreds of hopeful entrants.

Lukas, aged 22, has lived in Luton since 2006 and studies at the University Of Bedfordshire.

He said of his picture: "To me, the image is a symbol of British society; bargain hunting, spending, money driven and in many aspects superficial. It is a study, not a judgment. I never tell the viewers what to think, I just give them an image with clues and symbols."

Today's Vote

Should worldwide tours of the Olympic flame be abandoned to stop giving protestors an easy target
Yes, it's a pointless stunt anyway and would not be missed
No, you can't give in to bully tactics from any quarter
Bring on more protests, they are more entertaining than the sport
