Left-back Howells says he is happy to be a Hatter

Clubs are still clamouring for Jake Howells' signature after the 17-year-old put in a mature performance well beyond his years in Town's 1-1 draw at Bradford City on Saturday.

But the promising left-back insists he has no interest in leaving Kenilworth Road.

He said: "There are agents still ringing me and clubs talking to my dad when he is at a game. I don't really care what they think."

Now he's looking to take full advantage of the injuries suffered by Sol Davis and Lewis Emanuel, and he admits he can't let their misfortune stand in his way.

He said: "I've just got to take my chance now and build on it. I can't go on that, I need to do well for me.

"I knew I was going to have to wait my time. I'm only just 17. I've been training with the first team quite a bit and I've been doing well in the reserves."

On his first appearance of the season, he said: "I was warming up for quite a while. The gaffer told me I was going to come on. Lewis was struggling with an injury today and then Sol pulled up.

"He just threw me on and it was a good experience and hopefully I can push on."

And, after the Hatters had fallen a goal behind, Howells was told to push on more, which he did to great effect.

Howells added: "The gaffer said just get round your man and get a two-on-one with the full-back. That's what I've always been doing since I was young, getting forward.

"I need to improve my defensive performance and then I can get in the team."

Manager Mick Harford was full of praise for Howells, as was team-mate Michael Spillane, who added: "I thought young Jake was outstanding today."

Today's Vote

Should worldwide tours of the Olympic flame be abandoned to stop giving protestors an easy target
Yes, it's a pointless stunt anyway and would not be missed
No, you can't give in to bully tactics from any quarter
Bring on more protests, they are more entertaining than the sport
