Matt Allen takes on player/coach role at Newlands Road

Lutonians have secured a major coup ahead of the 2008-09 season with the signature of former Bedford Blues captain Matt Allen on a two year deal.

The hugely experienced Allen, who made over 180 appearances for Northampton and collected a European Cup winners medal before continuing his career with Cardiff and Bedford, will assume a player/coach role at Newlands Road with the emphasis on backs and skills coaching.

Allen's arrival signals Denis Ormesher's – who recently left the Blues to take over as director of rugby at Luton – intent to ensure that Lutonians bounce back from this year's relegation to Midlands One and regain their place in the National Leagues.

Ormesher said: "I am delighted that Matt will be joining us.
"Matt brings a tremendous amount of experience to Luton.

"As a player he will bring quality to our back line, as a coach his experience of playing at the highest level will be a real asset and, as an experienced professional, his approach to the game will set the standard for how we want to train, play and approach the game at Luton."

Allen, who works for the Professional Rugby Players Association as a player development manager, also has an RFU Level 2 coaching badge.

He said: "I am excited by the opportunity at Luton.

"Working as part of Denis' coaching team at Luton is a great way to start my coaching career.

"I was attracted by the focus on coaching and player development and by the ambition shown by the club. I am looking forward to next season and to doing all I can to help Luton to return to the National Leagues."

Yes, it's a pointless stunt anyway and would not be missed
No, you can't give in to bully tactics from any quarter
Bring on more protests, they are more entertaining than the sport
