Jevons nets decisive goal as Howells makes his Hatters debut
Coca-Cola League One
Luton Town 0 (0) Huddersfield Town 1 (0)
A typical end of season between two clubs with nothing to play for failed to produce any real sparkle at Kenilworth Road today..
Huddersfield substitute Phil Jevons scored the game's decisive goal late on, but in truth most of the players looked like they were already on their summer hols as low key Luton brought their season of woe to a dismal end.
The only bright spots for the Hatters were a second half debut for 17-year-old full-back Jake Howells and a first appearance of the season for injury-plagued midfielder Richard Langley, who also came on as a second half sub.
Freshly crowned Luton Town Supporters' Club's player of the season Keith Keane missed out with a groin injury, so Richard Jackson came in at right-back and Ed Asafu-Adjaye filled in at the heart of Hatter's defence. Lewis Emanuel took the captain's armband, Calvin Andrew came in for Paul McVeigh in attack and Howells took up a place on the bench for the first time.
With Kenilworth bathed in glorious sunshine the game was slow to get going and it was not until the 13th minute that Luton finally got a shot away. Stephen O'Leary laid the ball into Emanuel's path but his 25-yard effort was straight at Matt Glennon.
Seconds later Sol Davis got himself stupidly booked when he left his foot in after challenging a Huddersfield player.
Town's defence allowed Danny Schofield acres of space on 16 minutes as he raced down the right. His pull-back found Andy Holdsworth, but the right wing-back spooned his shot over the bar from just eight yards out.
Schofield raced on to a long ball over the top on 20 minutes, but could only shoot tamely at Dean Brill, while Andy Booth fired wildly over moments later after turning on the edge of Luton's box.
O'Leary curled curled a free-kick straigh at Glennon 28 minutes, but neither side were showing any real zest in this typical end of season encounter.
Town produced a lovely passing move on 35 minutes although Sam Parkin could only head Emanuel's whipped cross well over the bar.
O'Leary saw Glennon off his line with five minutes left, but his opportunistic long ranger went harmlessly over.
Luton created their best opportunity of the half in the last minute with their best move of the match. Matthew Spring's crisp pass gave Darren Currie time and space to find Parkin and the big hitman curled his effort just wide of the right-hand upright from the edge of the area.
Town started the second in more interested fashion and Asafu-Adjaye was inches away from giving them the lead on 50 minutes. The Terriers failed to clear a corner and his snapshot from the edge of the area flashed just wide of the right-hand post.
Emanuel's massively deflected 57th minute effort dipped just over the bar and from the resulting corner, Spring could only head Asafu-Adjaye's header back across goal wide of the target.
Luton registered their best effort of the day on the hour when Don Hutchison volleyed Currie's cross towards goal, but Glennon produced a great stop low to his ride to turn the ball away from goal.
However, it was the visitor who should have taken the lead six minutes later. A clever pass put substitute Jevons away down the right, but with Luton back in numbers his cross did not seem to pose any real problems. Hutchison failed to clear the first cross and a comedy of errors in the Hatters' defence allowed the ball to run all the way through to Schofield at the far post, but Brill produced a good save with his legs to deny the Terriers striker.
With 15 minute left Luton brought on Howells at left-back for his full debut and Langley, making his first appearance of the season, came on for Currie.
Just two minute later though the visitors took the lead. Joe Skarz teasing cross proved too good for Luton's defence and Jevons rose above Howells to plant his header into the bottom right-hand corner.
Jevons went close again with 10 minutes left, but his opportunistic lob drifted just over the bar with Brill well beaten.
