Victory means promotion race will go down to the wire

Dominant Luton AC re-estabalished themselves as promotion candidates from Division Two of the Southern Men's League after victory in the fifth match of the summer at the weekend.

The final score was hosts Luton 130, Brighton 118, Thurrock 103, Hillingdon, 100, while Cambridge and Colleridge were surprisingly last with 86.

The win hoists Luton up into fourth place in the table and now means that a top-two finish in the final match at Guildford on August 2, would guarantee them Division One competition next season.

Darren Green continued his outstanding season with another sparking performance and his time of 50.0secs in the 400m was both a personal best time and new club senior record and followed on from his success in the 100m race earlier in the afternoon, where he recorded a time of 11.0secs.

Green also went on to help the 4x100m relay team to victory, running a successful second leg.

Tom Best followed on from his winter exploits in the Chiltern League cross-country races and followed it up with another storming run in the 5,000m to set a new personal best of 15.25.7mins for a fighting second place.

Luton's team was weakened due to injury, but it allowed some new blood a chance to show their worth. Josh Bassett competed in three events, coming second in the javelin with a lifetime best of 42.22m, runner-up in the B string long jump with 5.81m and triumphed in the B string triple jump with 12.62m.

Chris Kingshott ran a personal best time of 1.00.9mins in the 400m hurdles and also contributed a high points score and a second place in the pole vault, recording 3.60m, before finishing off the day off with 20.1secs in the 110m hurdles.

The duo of Dave Burrell and Ricky Rasmussen contributed a massive 29 points to the overall total, Burrell taking second in the hammer event, discus and B string javelin as well as a respectable third place in the shot.
Rasmussen, meanwhile, placed second in the B string hammer and notched a valuable third in the B string discus and shot.

Tim Harris clocked 1.55.1mins to earn a fighting win in the 800m, added an outstanding victory in the 400m B string in 51.9secs and ran a tremendous leg in the 4x400m relay team.

In the sprints, Mark Collins (100m) and Isaac Rasmussen (200m B string) both recorded notable wins, while Kyle Andrew took second in the A string 200m in 23.2secs.

Elsewhere, Matthew Bardon equalled his personal best of 1.85m for victory in the high jump, while Craig Andrew took a fine first place in the B string with 1.65m. Andrew was also runner-up in the long jump (6.19m) and the triple jump (12.95m).

Middle distance runner Andy Johnson ran a strong third in the B string 800m in 2.02.5mins and, later in the afternoon, finished third in the 1,500m in 4.16.3mins. Johnson was well backed up by Gareth Edwards in the 1,500m, who finished third in the B string in 4.34mins, before going on to come home fourth in the steeplechase.

Chris Green set a personal best in the 400m hurdles and a season's best for the steeplechase, while Vinnie Bruce was a welcome returnee to the team when he competed in the 110m hurdles and the first leg of the 4x100m relay.

In other action, Luton's second team moved up to eighth in Division Four after recording their own second placed finish.

There was a double success for Lane Croft in the B string 400m and the 4x100m relay, while Liam McNabola took the honours in the 80m. Paul Brookes, meanwhile, set personal bests in the hammer, 5,000m and 3,000m steeplechase.

Today's Vote

Should worldwide tours of the Olympic flame be abandoned to stop giving protestors an easy target
Yes, it's a pointless stunt anyway and would not be missed
No, you can't give in to bully tactics from any quarter
Bring on more protests, they are more entertaining than the sport
