Matt Allen named as Lutonians' captain

Lutonians have added some Kiwi firepower to their squad for the forthcoming season with the signing of forward Dane Grey.

The 24-year-old Grey, who is currently playing Division One rugby in Otago for the Southern club, can play in either the second or back row and his versatility should stand Denis Ormesher's side in good stead.

On the signing, Ormesher said: "Dane will be a real asset to our pack and comes highly recommended by our contacts in New Zealand. He has played at a high level in New Zealand and his ability to play second row and back row will be invaluable."

Grey has represented North Otago, the Otago Maoris as well as the South Island Maoris, and Ormesher is hoping his signature will not be the last before the campaign kicks off.

He continued: "Dane's signing is part of our long term plan to strengthen the Luton squad.

"We are in discussions with a number of other new players to strengthen our squad and we hope to announce further signings before the beginning of the season."

The Newlands Road outfit have also announced that Matt Allen will captain the side this season.

Allen, who recently signed a two-year deal after his departure from the Bedford Blues, where he was captain for four years, has taken on a player/coach role and Ormesher feels he is the logical candidate for the captaincy.

He said: "Matt's experience at the top level, and in captaining Bedford Blues for the last four years, makes him the obvious choice to captain Luton. Matt's approach to the game will set the standard for how we want to train, play and approach the game at Luton."

The new captain added: "I am really looking forward to captaining the side. I've been very impressed by the lads, their work ethic and their desire to perform.

"It is clear that they were very disappointed with last season and they are looking to make amends immediately and return to the National Leagues."

Should worldwide tours of the Olympic flame be abandoned to stop giving protestors an easy target
Yes, it's a pointless stunt anyway and would not be missed
No, you can't give in to bully tactics from any quarter
Bring on more protests, they are more entertaining than the sport
