Sunday football round-up

Only goal difference prevented Stopsley United from securing a league and cup double after they were cruelly pipped to the South Beds Sunday League Division One title by Jolly Topers.

Topers needed a victory to climb above United and they did so with a hard-fought 4-1 win over a much improved Red Lion outfit.

Lee Hayward eased their nerves by opening the scoring midway through the first half, although tension set in again just after the break when an unfortunate own goal allowed Lion to draw level.

Hayward grabbed his second to restore Topers' lead, before completing a fine hat-trick shortly afterwards. Kris Miller then put the result beyond doubt with a fourth goal late on.

Despite their disappointment at missing out on the title, the United players did at least cap a fine season by winning by the Division One Cup final as brothers Michael and Graham Dearman helped them come from behind to beat Black Swan 2-1.

Barket Super League champions Luton Arndale hammered USL Rams 7-3, while in the Super Cup final, Stopsley Common smashed Wheelwrights 12-1 to clinch their first-ever trophy.

In other action, Moat FC reserves finished their season in style by winning the Playfootball.net North Home Counties Sunday League Reserve Cup after a thrilling 4-3 win over their Crawley Green counterparts.

Man of the match Tristan Patel scored twice for Moat, with Paul Raymond and Gary Raymond were also on target.

Today's Vote

Should worldwide tours of the Olympic flame be abandoned to stop giving protestors an easy target
Yes, it's a pointless stunt anyway and would not be missed
No, you can't give in to bully tactics from any quarter
Bring on more protests, they are more entertaining than the sport
