Monty can't inspire Vaughan's men to what looked like certain victory
Monty Panesar failed to build on his four first innings wickets as South Africa claimed a hard-earned draw from the first Test at Lord's on Monday.
The Luton left-arm spinner toiled through 60 overs in the tourists' marathon second innings which saw them conclude on 393-3 and ensure the series remained level going into the second Test at Headingley later this week.
It was a disappointing outcome for Michael Vaughan's men who had secured a 346-run lead, racking up 593-8 after being invited to bat.
Ian Bell, 199, and Kevin Pietersen, 152, were the main contributors in the home side's tally while Alastair Cook and Stuart Broad both made half-centuries.
Panesar did the majority of the damage when South Africa replied, taking 4-74 as they were dismissed for 247.
Vaughan even gave Panesar the new ball in the second innings – due to the bad light – but despite juggling his options, stubborn centuries from Graeme Smith, Neil McKenzie and Hasham Amla denied England a victory they would have been confident of collecting on Saturday night.
