One of the founders of the Shamiam Arif Appeal fund has been recognised for his work with Luton’s brave little burns survivor and other charities.
John McGoldrick won the Special Award at the Dumfries and Galloway Life magazine People of the Year Awards 2013, which had 53 nominees in 16 categories.
His nomination read: “A truly genuine individual whose selflessness knows no boundaries.
“John works tirelessly behind the scenes, never complaining, just getting on with the job.”
The retired Dumfries police chief superintendent said: “I’m still in shock really. Like the rest of the Shamiam team, we just get on with trying to help and support this inspirational young lady.
“DGLife Magazine has always taken an interest in Shamiam and her progress, so it’s great that all our efforts have been recognised.”
Shamiam was brought to this country for life-saving surgery by Farooq Ahmed, who was a special constable in Dumfries. The Arifs subsequently settled in Luton where they have family.
Mum Tahira said: “It’s fantastic, John so deserves this.”
