Award for town centre development

Castle Quay named king of the castle

A prestigious award made Bedford the king of the castle earlier this month for its Castle Quay development.

Bedford Borough Council's Castle Quay scheme celebrated success on Thursday, June 4 after it won the Places For All award at this year's Homes and Communities Agency Academy Awards in Camden, London.

Designers and architects were impressed upon its announcement five years ago, and work began on the basis that the development would enhance the area and create a new cultural focal point for the town.

After two years of building, the gates were drawn earlier this year, and Castle Quay was opened on February 19.

The prize was given for the scheme's strengthening of communities and its culture and heritage appeal, and was awarded to Bedford Borough Council and the Complex Development Projects. Contractor SDC and archaeologist Albion Archaeology were also recognised for their work in the development's production and design.

Trevor Roff, Bedford Borough Council's operational director of regeneration and economic growth, said: "The winning of this award recognises the contribution that Castle Quay is now making to the community of Bedford with the provision of improved facilities for local people."

The area contains 108 affordable apartments, an outdoor archaeological park, space for three restaurants and eight independent shops or cafes.

Mayor of Bedford Frank Branston added: "We are delighted to receive this recognition for the Castle Quay scheme. The council has worked extremely hard to bring this scheme to fruition."
