Baby joy at Bourn Hall
New mums Nicky Reynolds (left) and Helen Smith with baby Archie
Little Archie Pip Reynolds is one of a thousand babies born following NHS-funded IVF treatment at Bourn Hall.
But to mums Helen Smith and Nicky Reynolds of Swasedale Road in Luton, he’s one in a million.
The partners, who’ve been together since 2000, knew IVF was the only way they wanted to conceive.
“We were slightly worried about being a same sex couple,” Helen explained. “But the clinic was fantastic.
“They didn’t treat us any differently and they were so helpful.”
Helen – whom Archie calls Mummy, while Nicky is Mama – said they’d been very relaxed about the whole process, even though Helen had had complications following a blocked fallopian tube and a burst ovarian cyst.
“We thought if we get the funding, we get it, and if we fall pregnant, we fall pregnant,” she said.
They feel the same about a sibling for 13-month-old Archie, although they’re both 40 and would have to pay for any subsequent treatment.
Nicky, a software solutions analyst and Helen, a stay-at-home mum, are besotted with their baby.
Helen said: “He’s such an easy little boy and a very good sleeper.”
> The East of England was the first region in the country to implement new IVF guidelines in 2009.
