Bravery award for cinema worker who tackled arsonist

Security officer honoured for action which prevented former employee 'from certain death'

A courageous security officer who tackled an arsonist in a Bedford cinema has won a national award for his bravery.

Michael Benham was presented with the Outstanding Act prize at the British Security Association's Annual Security Officer Awards 2008 in London last Wednesday.

The 43-year-old was working at Cineworld on the Aspects Leisure Park in June last year when a former employee entered the foyer, poured petrol over the carpet and his own clothing and set the fuel alight.

Mr Benham was praised at the awards ceremony for his quick thinking and aptitude in not only tackling the employee and rolling him on the ground to prevent further harm but also putting out the fire in the cinema foyer.

Stuart Church, Cineworld cinema manager, said: "Michael acted quickly and decisively in what was a very serious situation. His commitment, attitude, bravery and professionalism were without doubt first class.

"Without Michael's quick reactions, the situation would have escalated. He certainly deserves this award."

Mr Benham, who works for security firm VSG, had previously been honoured in the South-East round of the awards, but was delighted to take the national title.

Henk Kruse, area manager for VSG, said: "Michael acted swiftly and professionally and almost certainly prevented the former employee from certain death and the cinema from further damage.

"Michael is indeed a credit to the company and his outstanding efforts certainly justify this award."
