MOTORISTS and residents will get the chance to have their say on multi million pound plans to improve traffic congestion on a roundabout linking Luton with the M1 motorway next week.

Blueprints for a new £26.5 million roundabout system at Junction 10a of the M1 will go on public display at Stockwood Discovery Centre next Friday (October 14) from 11am until 8pm and at The Mall Luton the following day from 9am to 5.30pm.

The plan would see removal of the existing roundabout and widening of the M1 Spur road to three lanes, to provide a continuous east-west carriageway with a speed limit of 50mph.

Two new roundabouts would be built to allow road users to join and leave London Road and the M1 Spur. London Road itself would be realigned, to pass under the M1 Spur, with pedestrians and cycle routes also provided.

Members of the design team will be present to answer questions and take feedback.

The roundabout is seen by Luton Borough Council as the ‘weak link’ between £800million improvements to the M1

and the recently completed East Luton Corridor.

Councillor Roy Davis said: “The existing junction is a large roundabout that experiences significant queues and delays, particularly at peak times.

“In recent years the Highways Agency has issued holding directives on many development sites instructing the Council not to grant planning permission for proposals that would generate jobs and growth. As a result, up to 900 of a potential 1,000 proposed new jobs are on hold that could be created from the relocation of Northern and Shell’s print operations and office accommodation for the Express newspaper group.”

Anyone who is unable to attend the community consultation events can provide their feedback by completing the comments form online at www.luton.gov.uk/currentconsultations, emailing M1J10a@Luton.gov.uk, via Twitter at www.twitter.com/lutoncouncil and Facebook at www.facebook.com/lutoncouncil or by calling 01582 54 72 49.

Closing date for receipt of comments is Tuesday November 15.
