Sports clubs win big money from Mall customers’ voting
Team Luton Swimming Club have been crowned Lutons Local Champions and awarded The Mall Lutons 2012 �5,000 charitable grant. The runners-up were Luton Town Hockey Club and Galaxy Gymnastics.
A shopping centre has given £5,000 to a Luton swimming club.
Team Luton Swimming Club has been crowned Luton’s Local Champions in a vote among customers at The Mall Luton.
Following public nominations, three organisations from Luton were shortlisted for their work to promote sport, exercise and an active lifestyle amongst young people.
During the past seven months shoppers spending more than £20 in The Mall were invited to post a token to vote for their preferred cause.
Team Luton Swimming Club won by a good length after securing a whopping 62 per cent of the vote. The club has more than 250 swimmers and encourages learning to swim at a young age.
The runners-up, Luton Town Hockey Club and Galaxy Gymnastics, were also rewarded with cheques for £300 at a presentation at The Mall Luton on September 12.
Gary Jesson, the swimming club’s vice chairman said: “The money will go a long way to ensuring that we can keep costs down for members, ensuring that competing in the sport remains affordable for both existing and new swimmers. What is even better is to have been nominated and selected by the people of Luton – it shows how much the public appreciates what we do and that is truly heartening.”
