AN Asian woman whose vision is to take business education, research and practice in “imaginative new directions” has been shortlisted for a major award.

Dr Sonal Minocha, the Dean of University of Bedfordshire’s Business School, is one of four nominees for the Woman of the Year category in the 2012 Asian Achievers’ Awards.

The AAA recognises outstanding work across all professions within the Asian community.

Dr Minocha said: “It’s great to be recognised, although I’m slightly embarrassed.

“Any contributions I have made are owed to the many great leaders and mentors who saw some potential in me and supported me through my career.

“My aim now is to ensure that those around me get the same opportunities that I got.

“And that’s why at our Business School we are working on a new vision to take business education, research and practice in imaginative new directions.

“We want to nurture and develop people who will ask difficult questions and make a difference in society. It’s only the beginning.

“I’m very grateful to the organisers of AAA and the people who shortlisted me – it reenergises my passion for shaping imaginative futures for our campuses and cities through education.”

Professor Les Ebdon, the University of Bedfordshire’s Vice Chancellor, said:“I’m delighted that the judges have recognised the outstanding contribution Dr Minocha has made to business leadership and education.

“Her challenging vision and tremendous energy are well on the way to making our Business School internationally recognised.”

Dr Minocha, who comes from the Indian capital of New Delhi became, probably, the youngest Dean in the country when she took up her post at the age of 32, at the University of Bedfordshire in January this year.

Her career spans both private and public sectors and has experience of working in both the Australasian and European contexts.

The AAA, in its 12th year, acknowledges the accomplishments of the finest in the UK’s Asian community.

It is hosted by Asian Business Publications, publishers of Asian Voice and Gujarat Samachar.

Candidates are nominated by the readers and winners selected by an independent panel of judges.

The winners will be announced on September 14 at a ceremony in Grosvenor House, Park Lane, London.
