Boxing clever to beat cancer

Aldwyck housing assistant Karlene O'Connor, 38, had never set foot in a boxing gym until two weeks ago.

But now she’s fighting fit and preparing to take part in an Ultra White Collar Boxing event for Cancer Research UK.

The former Barnfield student – who lost both her dad and her aunt to the disease – said: “I’m nervous about getting into the ring but my reason for supporting this wonderful cause far outweighs my fear. I do worry about getting hurt but I’m very focused on learning the skills and techniques that the wonderful trainers at Team Complete have been teaching me.

“I now understand the basics around footwork, defence and how to throw combinations.”

She added: “I’ve learned so much in just two weeks that I’m sure I’ll be totally ready come fight night to put on a great show, along with everyone else from the gym.”

The action takes place at the Auction House on Saturday, September 24.
