A spokesman said: “We think we may have accidentally stumbled across Dorothy’s burial location while investigating another murder dating back to 1821.

“But we think we may have come across the previously unknown location of Dorothy Spires, whose name may be spelt slightly differently.

“She was strangled by a large male who had a tooth missing, placed in a large bag and secretly buried in 1953.”

He appealed to anyone who may have known her to come forward and said: “While we were in contact with Dorothy she was asking for justice and we would like to help her.

“Of course we have no proof she ever existed or that her body is still buried at the location we found, unless we go and dig it up.

“We would like your help in laying a lost soul to rest.”
