The float will take part in the 40th annual carnival on Sunday, May 29.

Liam O’Donnell, of Hillborough Junior School, worked with Sergeant Carl Perri on the initiative to create the walking float.

By working with local schools and groups, Bedfordshire Police Float hopes to break down stereotypes of the police and engage the community in an innovative way.

Sergeant Perri said: “The float will humanise policing and show that the local force is part of the community it serves.

“The community cohesion team of Bedfordshire, led by Inspector Hob Hoque and myself are a small Police Unit dedicated to integrating the Police Force and the community.

“The Cohesion team is always looking to engage with the community to enhance positive relations.”

“The £500 will go towards the purchase of materials for the walking float. Without the funding this project would not be possible.

“We hope that our float for Luton Carnival’s 40th anniversary will be even more creative and unique than last year.”

The Police Mutual Foundation awards successful projects with grants.

Stephen Mann, chief executive of Police Mutual, said: “It is great to see even more members of the police family stepping forward to reward causes they feel improve lives within their communities.

“We have been staggered and delighted by both the quantity and quality of applications received, 1,376 his time.

“The fact that Force for Good is increasing in popularity proves how much an initiative designed to bring communities together resonates with people throughout the country.”
