Young Irish people thinking about moving to Luton can now benefit from a new one stop shop website ‘This is Luton.’
It’s the brainchild of Luton Irish Forum and was put together with funding from the Irish Youth Foundation, Bedfordshire and Luton Community Foundation and a legacy from former LIF member Anne O’Hehir.
LIF chief officer Noelette Hanley said: “It’s no longer possible for Irish people coming here to walk into a job.
“To get a national insurance number, they need proof of address and an employment offer letter. If further investigation is required, it can leave them in desperate circumstances.
“We’ve helped several new arrivals facing difficulties finding their feet. Many are sleeping on sofas and are unprepared for the harsh reality of life in Luton, like the cost of accommodation and the large deposit required.
“We hope ‘This is Luton’ will help them make an informed decision about coming to this country.”
The website was launched by Irish ambassador Daniel Mulhall on Friday (January 24).
