DO you know an unsung hero? Do you want to say a big thank you to a community group or business that has shown commitment or service that goes the extra mile?
Now in its third year, the Community Awards for Luton and Bedfordshire kicked off this week, giving you the chance to celebrate what is good about the town.
Organised by Community Magazine, the Herald&Post and Luton News is backing the awards which honour those whose selfless acts help to make the town a better place.
Local dignitaries (pictured above) met at the Venue Central in Luton on Monday to hear community awards founder Mostaque Koyes launch the awards and pledge money for the charities the awards are supporting, which this year are Keech Hospice and a vital community project in Malawi.
“Last year we raised £10,000 for the Luton and Dunstable Hospital NICU appeal,” he told the audience.
“I hope we can raise even more this year as local people are so generous.”
The categories include the concern award, young hero, charity champion, service with a smile, community business of the year, role model of the year, exceptional achievement award, community project of the year, community arts award, Our Luton award, greener living, lifetime achievement, carer of the year, volunteer of the year, teacher of the year and the Mayor’s award.
Applications are now being accepted with forms available online at http://www.communityluton.co.uk/awards12.html or from the Herald&Post office in Upper George Street, community centres and leisure centres, libraries, the Bartham Group and Pictons Solicitors.
Nominations close on September 5, 2012 and there will be an awards ceremony at Venue Central on November 2 to honour the winners.
