Wayne Common, 35, scaled Luton Crown Court five times in May of this year, repeatedly making off with lead tiles.

As a result, the roof suffered leaks and areas of the court, including the jury’s room, became difficult to use.

Night time security had to be stepped up as Common, of Luton, carried out his raids on the nights of May 17, 20, 21, 23 and 24.

He admitted five counts of stealing lead off the roof of Luton crown court in the town centre, stealing the lead from the roof of another residential property and failing to surrender and possessing an offensive weapon - a stanley knife.

Recorder Amanda Tipples QC handed him a nine month prison sentence suspended for 15 months, when he appeared at St Albans crown court via video link on Friday.
