You read it here first! Eight years ago the Herald&Post predicted that Stopsley lad Craig Hopkins would become the town’s own Billy Elliott.
Now the former Cardinal Newman pupil of Edgewood Drive has been awarded two dance scholarships – the first to Wilkes Academy in Swindon and the second to London’s prestigious Urdang Academy.
The talented teenager – who has an unindentical twin brother, Kyle – has gone with Urdang “because it’s the biggest dance college in the UK.”
Craig’s passion for performance started when he was about 10 and he’s never looked back. “I can’t imagine another way of life,” he said. “I live it and breathe it.”
He completed a two year course at North Hertfordshire College before demonstrating his ballet, tap, jazz, singing and dancing styles at the auditions.
“I think they went well,” he admitted modestly. “I was absolutely thrilled to be offered both scholarships.” He’ll commute from home and carry on with his two part-time jobs, cleaning offices and helping out at Stopsley Co-Op. His ambition is to do some stage work when he graduates from Urdang in three years’ time.
