Create a dress based on a book, play or fictional character.

That was the brief given to Years 8, 9 and 10 at Lealands High School as part of Literacy Week and World Book Day.

The design had to include the finished dress and details of colours, materials and textures.

The winner was Year 8 student Anais Justin whose design was based around Roald Dahl’s Matilda.

The top of the dress has a pattern of sums, acknowledging Matilda’s maths ability. The large red bow around the waist is a replica of the one in her hair and there’s a quote from the book on her skirt, alongside books to illustrate her love of reading.

There’s also a picture of a falling glass to represent her mind powers.

The entries were judged by headteacher John Burridge and head of technology Victoria Ayres.

The best entries will be sent to the national Stardust Boutique Design-a-Dress competition which offers a £100 cash prize, plus £500 towards the school’s prom.
