With the onset of welfare cuts and high unemployment, there are a lot of people in Luton suffering.
In Luton there are more than 400 families who do not have enough money to buy food for themselves. In addition the number of people who are becoming homeless and living on the streets has increased. With this in mind, Discover Islam launched a number of initiatives to work towards helping the poor and needy in Luton.
These projects included the innovative fastathon challenge, food drive appeal to stock Luton Food Bank and a community iftar during the month of Ramadan feeding the poor and homeless.
The fastathon challenge took place in July. Lutonians were encouraged to skip a lunch and donate their lunch money to Luton Food Bank.
