Art exhibiton in Bute’s footsteps
Arts team volunteer Bela Brown with some of the work to be exhibited at Luton Hoo Walled Garden
There’s an historical element to this year’s Luton Hoo Walled Garden Open Art Exhibition.
It’s 300 years since the birth of the third Earl of Bute, who commissioned Capability Brown to design the garden which is now being restored.
Co-ordinator Charlotte Phillips said: “He was a renowned botanist, the first director of Kew Gardens and a keen sponsor of 18th Century artists.
“I like to think we are following in his footsteps. Our aim is to establish the garden as a focus for all sorts of artistic activity.”
The theme of this year’s exhibition – open from Friday to Sunday (March 222 - 24) – is The Garden and Beyond.
Work from more than 100 artists will be on display, alongside that of 12 schools.
Visitors will be able to vote for their favourite exhibit and the Department of Art and Design at the University of Bedfordshire is sponsoring a prize for the best piece by a secondary school student.
Department head Colin Davies said he’d been very impressed by the standard: “It’s not just painting-based – there are collages and sculptures which is so exciting.”
He added: “We’re offering two three-day workshops in life classes and our print studio so youngsters can spend some time with undergraduates and get a feel of what it’s like.”
The free exhibition will be open from noon to 7pm on Friday and from 11am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.
