Black History Month is back following a two year absence. There have been several successful events around town, courtesy of not-for-profit community-based organisation AHEAD, founded by Anthony Jules and Debra Knight.

Explaining its importance, Mr Jules said: “The significance of Black History month is primarily because the curriculum does not feature the achievements and contribution of African and Caribbean people to the UK or the world.”

On Saturday the AHEAD founder member hosted an event at the UK Centre for Carnival and Arts in St Mary’s Road. He said: “It was well attended by a mixed audience, both culturally and generationally, and featured some lively debate.”

Upcoming events include a Chefs Challenge – African Cuisine at UKCCA from 3pm to 6pm on Sunday (October 14) and Womens Night on Friday, October 19 at the Town Hall. Guest speakers include Mary Emeji and Nziger Knight. Former local councillor Jim Thakaoordin has also written a new book, Our Lives Our History Our Future featuring Black History.
